Há muitas regras falando sobre o uso dos artigos. Mas aqui nós concentraremos em 3 regras de ouro. Os piores erros são feitos quando se quebra uma dessas regras.
- Quando nós dizemos a profissão das pessoas, usamos a/na;
- No singular, substantivos contáveis sempre temos um artigo – a/an ou the – ou outro determinante(“determiner” (my, your, this, that etc.)).
- She’s an architect.
- He’s a doctor.
- My grandfather was a teacher.
Lembre se que usamos o artigo indefinido – a/an – quando estamos falando sobre alguma coisa que não é definida:
- I saw a good film yesterday. The listener doesn’t know which film.
- There’s a man at the door. We don’t know who the man is.
- Do you want a drink? It’s not a particular drink.
…E usamos o artigo – the – quando estamos falando sobre algo mais exato.
- I’m going to take the dog for a walk. The dog is a pet – it’s not just any dog.
- Have you seen the car key? Speaker and listener know which car. It’s not just any car.
- They live in the house opposite ours. There’s only one house opposite. It’s not any house.
- Quando estamos falando sobre coisas em geral, geralmente usamos um substantivo no plural ou um substantivo incontável sem artigo.
- Birds eat worms. NOT The birds eat the worms.
- Water flows downhill.
- Kangaroos live in Australia.
Mas “We went to the zoo and saw the kangaroos”. Esses cangurus são específicos de alguém ou de algum lugar e não cangurus em geral.
Há mais outras regras sobre o uso dos artigos, mas se entender bem essas 3 regras, você diminuirá seus erros.
