No inglês americano, program é a ortografia correta. No inglês australiano, program e programme são aceitáveis. No inglês britânico, programme é a ortografia preferida, embora program seja freqüentemente usado em contextos de computação.

Décadas atrás, program apareceu na escrita americana e britânica. No século XIX, os britânicos começaram a favorecer a maneira francesa de soletrá-la - programme. Não importa como seja  escrita, significa um plano de ações, atividades ou procedimentos, geralmente para um propósito específico. Alternativamente, pode se referir a uma lista de atos ou artistas associados a um evento, como uma peça teatral ou um concerto. Program também pode funcionar como um verbo. Significa definir, regular ou modificar para produzir um resultado específico. Ao se referir a escrever código, tanto britânicos e americanos usam program como a ortografia preferida.
