Languages open so many doors, in terms of history, culture and travel, but the finer details and subtleties of language and grammar fascinate me, too. Having the opportunity to explore these nuances from scratch and explain the concepts to others is what pushed me towards tutoring.
Having tutored pupils of various ages and abilities, I am adaptable and used to working with a wide range of age groups and abilities to achieve the best possible result, improving both the performance and the confidence of the students along the way. I am comfortable teaching in line with various exam boards and have an excellent knowledge of all of the subjects I tutor, as well as access to a lot of resources.
For me, a slow and simple approach to difficult topics (no confusing jargon!) is the most useful way to learn, followed up with exercises and past papers to really consolidate understanding. This is the way I generally go about lessons, simplifying ideas and concepts in such a way that ensures full understanding from the tutee;
I have found that the most important thing is to tailor lessons to each student's needs; identifying their strengths and weaknesses and working on these in order to build confidence. It's extremely important to always be encouraging to the student, pointing out the positives as well as the areas to improve. I understand the patience and enthusiasm that is necessary to teach, and I am more than willing to spend as much time as is necessary on something until it makes sense!
