Você sabe como falar de idade em inglês? Cuidado com o erro mais comum dos brasileiros!

Age – Use To Be, not To Have

Brazilian speakers make the common mistake of using To Have instead of To Be when they are giving or stating an Age.

In English when we want say our age, we use:

To Be + Number (age) + years old.

• I am 25 years old
• Susan is fifteen years old
• My father is 50 years old

Spanish speakers often translate from their language and use the verb “Have” with the age. This is NOT correct:

• I have 25 years old. (Incorrect)
• I am 25 years old. (Correct)

Years Old
Native speakers don’t often use “years old” as most of the time the context of age is clear, therefore it’s unnecessary and a little formal.
If you do decide to say “years” you must add the world “old” after it.

• He is 30. (Correct)
• He is 30 years old. (Correct)
• He is 30 years. (Incorrect)
