Short answers - was / were

Olá Alex, tudo bem?

Nesta sua questão devemos relembrar os conceitos do tempo passado do verbo to be (was e were).

"Was" usamos para situações do singular ou para coisas, ou seja, usamos em He, She, It

"Were" usamos em situações do plural, quando é mais de um sujeito na conversa: We, They, You (aqui pode ser no singular).

Quando queremos nos referir à forma negativa, acrescentamos o "not" após o verbo: was not ou were not. Ou podemos usar a forma abreviada: wasn't ou weren't. 

Vamos fazer alguns exemplos que você mencionou?

a)Was Garrincha an actor? (Negative / a soccer player) : No, he wasn't. He was a soccer player

b)Were Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso taxi drivers? (Negative / artists) : No they weren't. They were artists

e) Was Tom Jobim a doctor? (Negative / a singer and a composer) No, he wasn't, Tom Jobim was a singer and a composer.

f) Was Diana Spencer a Princess? (Positive) Yes, she was. ( Yes, Diana Spancer was a Princess)

g) Was Elvis Presley ‘The King of Rock ‘n’Roll’ ? (Positive) Yes he was. (Yes, Elvis Presley was 'The King of Rock 'n'  Roll') 

Sobre o conteúdo: 

Was e were são as flexões do verbo to be no passado.

A flexão was é usada com os pronomes I (eu), he (ele), she (ela), it (utilizado para fazer referência a pessoas, animais, lugares e/ou objetos).

Já a flexão were é usada com os pronomes you (você), we (nós), you (vocês) e they (eles/elas).
