BINOMIALS are expressions (often idiomatic) where two words are joined by a conjunction ( usually 'and' ).The order of the words is usually fixed. It is best to use them in informal situations but they can also be used in formal contexts when they are neutral binomials such as :
. black and white
ex: A black and white shirt, please.
. back and forth
ex: Lucy ran back and forth in the park.
. ladies and gentlemen
ex:Ladies and gentlemen your attention,please !
. hot and cold
ex: There was hot and cold water in every room.
You can often tell something is a binomial because of the sound pattern.
She has to wine and dine important clients.( entertain )
Tears are part and parcel of growing up .(part of/ belong to )
The old cottage has gone to rack and ruin.( ruined /decayed )
Jane is so prim and proper at work.( rather formal and fussy )
Binomials can also be linked by words other than and.
Slowly but surely,I realized the boat was sinking.
Sooner or later, you´ll learn your lesson.
Well I´m sorry, that´s all I can offer you;take it or live it.
Many grammar words combine to form binomials.
There are drugstores here and there.(scattered around )
Lucy ran up and down the street.( in both directions)
John is unemployed and down and out.( without a home and money )
Binomials also appear in several songs and we sing them very naturally. You probably remember these two famous songs :
Night and Day (click here )
Bridge over Troubled waters ( click here )
The first song has a binomial in its title. The second one ,while you´re reading
the lyrics ,you´ll see :" down and out " (without a home or money ).
Then let´s sing along, learn and enjoy them !
