Why and how we can learn a lot of English with songs ,poems and proverbs.

Whenever we listen to songs, poems and proverbs in a foreign language, we have the chance of learning a lot of vocabulary in a smooth agreeable way.It may be a great motivation to look up the meaning of their lyrics and words in different contexts which will make learners feel more confident and independent while communicating and exchanging information in different situations.Focusing on the sounds and intonation while listening to songs and poems, it can really help anyone to speak correctly short or long sentences in different contexts.

Since the words sound beautiful to everyone's ears ,the listeners may try not only to keep them in mind ,with their correct pronunciation, but they can also repeat them out loud to practise and improve their oral expression in the foreign language.Repetion in a melodic pattern will certainly enhance the learners' oral fluency.

Some poems and proverbs  are very short but they usually have a lot of meaning packed tightly into them. This meaning can be "unpacked "in various ways to enhance oral fluency.

For example:  " Eat the grape and not the vine."

                                                                                                                                       (Turkish proverb )

.Insert a phrase or clause before the proverb.

e.g. Wise people eat the grape and not the vine.

We should all learn to eat the grape and not the vine.

It is better to learn to eat the grape and not the vine

.Imagine this proverb is the last sentence of a short story.Tell or write the story which leads up to the proverb.

. Make the proverb shorter by starting it with "Don't".

e.g Don't eat vines, eat grapes.

.Shorten it to four words by making nouns into plurals

 e.g Eat grapes,not vines.

How about these proverbs ?

" A rolling stone gathers no moss."

"The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence."

"All that glitters is not gold."

Poems are not necessarily 'more difficult' than prose,as many think but they are different. They are often written within stricter 'rules' than prose(rhyme, rhythm, meter, etc.)But this means that they can be very interesting and useful for listeners and learners. For example :

Verbs

A verb is the worst thing in the world

 For me to learn aright,

And when the teacher calls on me

I never get it right.

I try to give the parts of verbs

And say see,saw,seen

But when I give the parts of be

  I can't say bee,baw ,been !

If I give the parts of go

 And say go,went, gone,

It doesn't help a bit with grow !

I can't say grew,grent,grone.

The parts of take you´re very sure

  Are take,took and taken

 Yet bake is very wrong

As bake and book and baken

Dele Olaniyi

This poem can be used as a warm up in a grammar /conversation lesson, can't it ?

Learners will have the chance to review verb tenses and also talk about their difficulties to learn and use the foreign grammar/language more accurately.

There are some songwriters who compose nice songs which tell short stories giving the listeners the chance to sing along and understand the song´s message right

away.Afterwards there can be a discussion about the story or some questions and answers to provide a nice conversation among friends about the story. For instance:

Sting composed the song After The Rain Has Fallen.Let´s listen to the song and sing along . Then talk about this story,ok ?

Enjoy !
