For example : "to go bananas " which is used in informal contexts has nothing to do with food ! It is an expression that is used when we are so excited that we act almost out of control. It is a very odd expression,isn't it ?
"To go bananas " means to behave in a very over-enthusiastic way,like you've gone crazy.It's an expression about behaviour that expresses not only an "explosion of happiness" .It can also mean to get a little bit angry, irrational and lose your judgment in some difficult situations too.

I can't always eat bananas but once in a while I eat bananas for a change !
However before going bananas it is more reasonable to stop and think about the situation just to be on the safe side !!! I don't remember the last time I went bananas.

I've Never Listened To This Idiom Before. ' To Go Bananas ' Sounds Funny Because When We Think About Bananas We Think Of Eating Them. By The Way, I Go Bananas When My Team Is Losing. All The Teachers At My School Go Bananas When We Talk Too Much During Their Classes.
