How about this definition ?
Cliché : noun, an idea or expression deficient
in originality or freshness.
Clear enough,I guess. Many people prefer not to
use clichés when they are expressing their ideas
in english. It´s much better ,indeed, to give your
opinions about different subjects using "fresh"
words,I mean, instead of using words which
are always repeated and too obvious.
You may try to use something
more original.
When you think someone or some-
thing is ugly ,you may say :
.Beauty is a matter of taste.
.You can´t tell a book by its cover.
.It is inside that really matters or
Beauty is only skin deep.
.It/He has other qualities
Some people say that the constant use of
clichés become a barrier to communication.
"When readers and listeners come across
these tired expressions, they start turning out
and completely miss the message
-assuming there is one ."
By the way, this phrase above was
chosen to be the most irritating or
annoying cliché in a research made
in Britain some years ago.
Besides that one ,there were other
words such as :
Absolutely !
Awesome !
Literally .
Basically .
.Thinking outside the box.
.Bottom line
Well,do you use a lot of them ? Do you
have a favorite cliché ?
I do have one : Carpe Diem !
Anyway , let´s try to avoid them so that
our listeners may enjoy our conversations.
