Is October the witches' month ?

Witch(es)(n.)= someone,especially a

woman who is believed to practice sor-

cery (magic)and looks very weird and

ugly.Witches can move and fly away on

their brooms.

wizard (n.)= a magician ,sorcerer

Not only children but also adults cannot

resist the charm of witches and wizards

who are often present in fairy tales,films

and several novels.

Readers and watchers get really excited

with the magical powers of these surreal

characters who keep everyone glued to the

screens or pages of thick books.Consequen-

-tly in October , at Halloween parties ,many

women put on witches' costumes and hats and

several  men dress themselves like wizards.

Halloween parties started with the pagans

who lived in Britain 2,000 years ago and cele-

-brated their New Year on 1 November. Then 

the Christians came  and people  celebrated

'Hallowmas, a three-day festival between 31

October and2 November. 31 October was call-

-ed  All Hallow's Eve, and slowly the name chan-

-ged to Halloween.

In Canada and the U.S.A,and sometimes in

Britain children go "trick or treating".They

dress like witches and ghosts,and go to the

houses around where they live,often in small

groups.

When someone answers the door,the

children say : "trick or treat ?" This means

that  the person in  the house must decide:

either they give the children a treat (fruit,cho-

-colate,candies) or the children will play a trick

on them!
