The second-biggest multi-sport event in the world,after the Olympic Games ,the Paralympic Games are for top athletes who have a disability.The Games are organized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The Games were the idea of a doctor ,Ludiwig Guttmann,who believed his severely injured patients would benifit from exercise.In 1948,he organized a wheelchair archery competition at his hospital-Stoke Mandeville,in England.

The Stoke Mandeville Games expanded and became an annual event,developing into the first Paralympic Games in Rome,in 1960.Until 1976,they were for wheelchair athletes only.

In Rome ,400 athletes competed from 23 countries.By London 2012,there were over 4,200,from 164 countries.Now, there are 10 different disability categories,with athletes divided into groups within the categories,according to their level of disability.Most events are in athletics and swimming.
