Valentine's day 2016

Inglês

Time to celebrate love ! Valentine's day started

over two thousand years ago,as a winter festival,

on 15 February. On that day,  pagans asked their

gods to give them good fruit and vegetables, and

strong animals.

When Christians arrived in Britain, they told people

a story about a man named Saint Valentine.  The

story was that Valentine was a Christian who lived

in the third century(between the years 200 and 300).

The Roman Emperor at the time was Claudius II.He

was not a Christian.  Claudius believed his soldiers

should not marry, because married soldiers weren't

good warriors.

Valentine worked for the church, and one day he

helped a soldier to get married. When Claudius II

knew about it,he decided Valentine had to die .

In jail Valentine started to love the daughter of

a man who worked in prison. The day he died,he

sent a note to this woman, and at its end ,he wro-

-te :" Your Valentine". He died on 14 February, so

the date of the festival changed from 15 to 14 Fe-

-bruary ,and the name changed to Saint Valentine's

Day.

In the early 19th century, when the post

office started in Britain, people began to

send Valentine's cards to the persons they

loved on 14 February. A lot of people still

send Valentine's cards to their sweethearts.

Do you believe it ?
