What's in a nickname ?

Some people believe that a nickname is " a sign of intimacy, trust, and friendship." Many others believe that " A formal name creates a barrier,a short one can break down walls ."

 What do you think about nicknames ? Why should or shouldn't  people call you by a nickname ? What's in a nickname ? Why are there so many people who prefer not to say their real formal proper names ?
