Why is abbreviation such a long word ?

Inglês Writing Vip

 Abbreviations (Short cuts),Acronyms or Initialisms ?

 Abbreviations are any shortened form of a word.

Ex: Oct. ; Wed. ; etc. ; decaf. (decaffeinated coffee );

deli.(delicatessen);chute. (parachute); caps. (capital letters).

Acronyms are made from the first letter (or letters)of

a string of words but they are pronounced as if they

were words themselves.

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

NIMBY (not in my backyard);

HAZMAT (hazardous materials)

VIP (very important people)

AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)

With hundreds of millions of people texting regularly,

it´s no wonder abbreviations or chat acronyms (short cuts)

are used to save time and express ideas with just a few

letters .It is easy to get confused by all abbreviations ,text

short cuts used by experienced Internet users in social networks

where people want( or are required)to use only a few typed

characters to communicate a  thought or idea.

Take a look at the list below .I believe you can

probably make it longer,can´t you ?

asap = as soon as possible

U2U= Up to you

BFN =Bye for now

B4= Before

FYI= For your information

CUOL= See you on line

TTUL=Talk to you later

F2F =Face to Face

LOL =Laughing Out Loud

H&K= Hugs and kisses

TGIF = Thanks God It is Friday

CU= See You

Most of these short cuts are written in ALL CAPS but

it is not mandatory to use the capital letters,and most

people tend to mix upper-and lower case depending on

personal taste. Using caps. for the acronyms themselves

is generally not considered poor netiquette;however,

writing whole words or sentences in ALL CAPS is usually

read as "shouting" an thus easily considered offensive.

Initialisms are made from first letter (or letters)

of a string of words ,but cannot be pronounced

as words themselves.

      = Repondez s'il vous plait

IQ (Intelligence Quotient)

FBI ( Federal Bureau of Investigation)

CIA (Central Intelligence Agency)

FYI  ( For Your Information) ;

PR (Public Relations)

CEO ( Chief Executive Officer)

PTO =Please Turn Over

A.K.A= Also Known As

UFO (Unidentified Flying Object )

ATM (Automated Teller Machine)

RIP ( Rest in Peace )

TTYL ( Talk to you later),ok ?

Take care.
