Grammar: Reported Speech
It is the opposite of “direct speech”. Examples:
Julie told me she doesn’t want to work today.
Julie said she doesn’t want to work today.
Julie said to me that she doesn’t want to work today.
To form a sentence using Reported Speech it is necessary put the subject, a verb at the past and the main information hereinafter.
With questions:
Original question: Do you want a coffee?
Reported speech of this question: Julie is asking you if you want a coffee (present)
Reported speech of this question (past): Julie asked you if you wanted a coffee.
Important: Observe the word order of this sentence:
Original question: Where are you from?
Reported speech of this question: Julie is asking you where you are from (we change the original question order).
